How to Get to Sulawesi

Updated August 2026 · routes verified against current airline schedules · by the Celebes Eco Tours team, based in Minahasa

Sulawesi feels wonderfully remote — and getting here is easier than most travelers expect. Manado and Makassar both receive direct international flights, and whether you are coming from Europe, the Americas, Australia or China, there is a smooth route. Here is how we help our guests plan arrivals every week.

The Two Gateways

  • Manado (MDC) — Sam Ratulangi International Airport, North Sulawesi. Your entry for Bunaken, Lembeh, Tangkoko and the Minahasa highlands.
  • Makassar (UPG) — Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, South Sulawesi. Your entry for Tana Toraja, Rammang-Rammang and Bira.

Manado and Makassar are connected by frequent 2-hour flights, so combining north and south in one trip is easy.

Direct International Flights (Current Schedule)

To Manado (MDC)

  • Guangzhou, China (CAN) — China Southern, Garuda Indonesia and TransNusa; roughly two flights daily, about 4.5 hours. The park's largest international market.
  • Ningbo, China (NGB) — Batik Air, weekly.
  • Seoul, South Korea (ICN) — several weekly flights.
  • Shanghai, China (PVG) — weekly service.
  • Singapore (SIN) — Scoot, daily, about 3.5 hours. The perfect bridge for European and American travelers via Changi.

To Makassar (UPG)

  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KUL) — AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines.
  • Singapore (SIN) — Scoot.

Schedules shift with seasons — we confirm the current timetable for every guest before booking.

From Europe

The fastest routes run through Singapore: Scoot's daily Singapore–Manado flight (around 3.5 hours) makes connections via Changi remarkably smooth from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris — typically 16–20 hours door to door. Alternatively, fly the Gulf carriers or direct services to Jakarta or Bali and connect domestically to either gateway. For Toraja-focused trips, note that Kuala Lumpur–Makassar is a direct hop with AirAsia.

From the Americas

There are no non-stop flights from the Americas. The smoothest options route through Singapore (Scoot on to Manado) or Bali/Jakarta with a same-day domestic connection. From the US West Coast, count on 24–30 hours door to door — we recommend a one-night stopover in Singapore or Bali to arrive fresh.

From Australia

Australia is Sulawesi's close neighbour. The most common routing is Australian city → Bali → Manado — the Bali–Manado leg runs about six times weekly and takes just 2.5 hours. Singapore is the alternative hub. From Darwin or Perth, total journey times can be under 8 hours. Perfect for a one-week dive or wildlife escape.

From China

China has the best direct connections of all: Guangzhou–Manado flies about twice daily (4.5 hours), with weekly services from Ningbo and Shanghai, plus Seoul as a nearby hub. Chinese passport holders can use Indonesia's e-VOA system, and our team uses translation tools to make everything smooth. Our Chinese-language site has the full details.

Visas on Arrival

Indonesia's Visa on Arrival / e-VOA covers 90+ nationalities — including the EU, UK, US, Australia and China — costing around IDR 500,000 for 30 days, extendable once. Apply online via the official e-VOA portal to skip the queue. Always double-check current rules before flying; we send all guests an up-to-date arrival checklist with their booking.

Booking Tips From Locals

  • Book international and domestic tickets separately but allow 3+ hours of buffer at Jakarta, Bali or Singapore for the transfer.
  • Domestic airlines include Garuda, Batik Air, Lion, Citilink and Super Air Jet — fares are low but baggage allowances vary; check before flying.
  • Morning arrivals into Manado let you snorkel Bunaken the very next morning.
  • For Toraja, fly into Makassar (direct from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore); for everything north, fly into Manado (direct from Singapore, Guangzhou, Seoul or via Bali) — or do both with our 9-day Culture & Nature Adventure.
  • Send us your flight numbers — airport pickup is included in every package, and we track delays.
