By the Celebes Eco Tours team · we run Tangkoko trips every week
Only 1.5–2.5 hours from Manado, Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve packs more endemic wildlife into a few square kilometres than almost anywhere in Asia. Volcanic foothills draped in fig trees, a black-sand coast, and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Here is everything to know before you go.
Barely 12 centimetres tall and unchanged for some 45 million years, the tarsier is the reason most visitors come. Each evening at dusk, family groups wake in fig trees and leap off to hunt insects. Our rangers know the sleeping trees, so sightings are near-guaranteed — and because we keep lights off and distance respectful, the tarsiers behave naturally. Best time: 5:45–6:45 pm.
The “yaki” — critically endangered and found only at the northern tip of Sulawesi. Troops of up to 50 forage along the trails at dawn: grooming, play-fighting, and staring straight back at your camera with striking amber eyes. Best time: first hours after 6 am.
A strange, slow-moving marsupial that looks like a cross between a teddy bear and a monkey, dozing high in the canopy. Sightings are regular but never guaranteed — which is exactly what makes them special.
Sulawesi's most remarkable bird lays its eggs in sun-warmed volcanic sand and lets the beach do the incubating. Tangkoko's protected nesting ground is one of the last strongholds of this endangered megapode.
The knobbed hornbill with its golden casque, the Sulawesi pitta hopping on the forest floor, purple-winged rollers and owls on the night walk. Bring binoculars; our birding guides know every call.
Tangkoko works year-round. The forest is easiest to walk May–September; after rain, leeches appear on some trails (socks help). Dawn and dusk are when the forest performs — plan an overnight stay in a lodge at the reserve's edge rather than a rushed day trip.
Fly into Manado, drive 1.5–2.5 hours to Bitung's coastal side, and stay in one of the simple lodges near the reserve gate. We arrange the transfer, lodge, rangers and permits as part of our North Sulawesi Discovery tour — or as a standalone overnight on request.
We run private, tailor-made tours across Sulawesi and the Moluccas — ask us anything on WhatsApp, we reply fast.
